Gained international acclaim at the La Biennale di Venezia 2001 when he installed his own front door and showcased his work Haus Ur. Schneider applies modern art theory with an advanced conceptual approach to material to create his works. Often playing on the core of human emotion as well as understanding his place in the history of sculpture. The works are a mix between the banale and terrifying.
In Haus Ur Schneider has transformed the structure into a masterpiece of art. Endless modifications and rearrangements of rooms with each room distinct from one another depending on the details you notice. Some rooms are completely barren and unordinary clean. While others have a feeling if something tragic occurred. Other rooms are completely sound isolated with multiple layers of lead and sound proofing material. A multitude of entrances await one who navigates the work Haus Ur , as with several rooms a wall must be moved or a ladder to be climbed. There is always some form of emotional or physical challenge with the rooms. Greogor Schnieder has not created art that is either an installation or pure sculpture. Gregor Schneider utilizes Interior design with modernist Freudian principles in a manner that resembles of Horror film. Gordon matta Clark cut holes into rooms and walls of buildings and then showcased them. Schneider has taken Clark’s principle of anarchitecture to the level of one abandoning the ready made that is the existing and created the new form.
One of Schneider’s newest pieces is a large black square that is presented in a social square. The structure resembles a religious icon and has caused controversy. I’m not sure how I personally feel about this but he has become more aggressive with his work to a point of being almost spectacle which I would surely be disappointed if he went that route. Regardless Haus Ur is in my top 10 of all time greatest pieces of art.
